Craft Beer Bars and Tap Rooms in Yokohama
I had the pleasure of living and working in YOKOHAMA and I loved it! Japan for a year and in this time I visited every craft beer place I could find and attended every craft beer festival and event I could find and had a blast doing so! So after a year of research I have compiled a list of the best craft beer bars and craft beer taprooms in Yokohama and events I attended (and then stumbled home from… or rather… stumbling to get that last train home!
This list works from North to South…. did someone suggest a craft beer pub crawl??? Hell Yeah!
Also - there a special listing for my hometown NAMAMUGI and the cool craft beer scene there. Namamugi is a short trip from Yokohama on the Keihin Kyuko Line (the dark red trains), on the way toward Tokyo and just before you get to Tsurumi and Kawasaki. Namaugi has charm and character with several craft beer tap rooms and a couple of great restaurants that serve craft beer. Namamugi even has its own beer festival and during the year I lived there there were two such events.

No frills - craft beer and heavy metal music. This is is the epitome of Japanese style for me, the owner has a clear focus and that passion is for quality craft beer and heavy music. Koichi Katsuki opened Thrashzone in homage to his love of Microbrews and Heavy Metal, and he has developed a loyal following of locals and expats to his utilitarian brewpub. The décor consists of concrete, vintage Metal and Punk posters, and a huge façade of Marshall amps. At a nearby location, he has a one-barrel brewery where he crafts his own beers to serve in his shop. Koichi-san has taken several extended trips to the US to research his favorite breweries, to decide which beers to import, to source hops, and to get brewing tips from his American counterparts. In addition to American microbrews, usually of the heavy-hopped varieties, he rotates fine crafted Japanese small batch brews, and one or two of his own creations as well.

Japan Brewers’ Cup - Craft Beer Festival
The Japan Brewers’ Cup is one of Japan’s biggest yearly brewery festivals held at the beautiful Osanbashi pier in Yokohama. For a period of 4 days, Devil Craft, Far Yeast Brewing Company, Shonan Beer and Swanlake Beer will be selling their products. Single cup prices start at around ¥500 (prices vary for each vendor). During the festival, the results of the morning competition will be announced and an awards ceremony will be held for the winning breweries. The food stalls are local shops from around Yokohama and will be offering the perfect dishes from their menus to go with the beer. This includes Chinese barbecue, grilled beef, yakitori (chicken skewers), cold cuts and cheese platters. Definitely a must-come for any beer lover!
