Bodega Lanzaga LZ 2017

The Tasting Experience

The Bodega Lanzaga LZ 2017 is a fruity, attractive, fresh and very good wine. There’s evidence of black fruit aromas and herbs. The LZ has medium acidity, high tannins and is medium bodied with a long finish. A delightful, easy-to-drink and lively red wine. Rating ★★★★

The Producer

Bodegas Lanzaga is a 19 hectares vineyard in Rioja Alavesa, Spain and is grapes are farmed organically and biodynamically. The winemaking process is simply fermented and aged in small cement tanks before bottling. Bodega Lanzaga is a project of Telmo Rodriguez and Pablo Ejuzkiza. Known as Compania de Vinos, Telmo and Pablo's collaboration aims to identify and restore ancient, indigenous varieties in top vineyards throughout Spain. In 1999, they purchased a 17th century Bodega and set about trying to understand how Rioja was made before phylloxera, chemicals and machines. LZ Rioja is a tribute to the village grape growers of the 1920s. Telmo and Pablo love to imagine how they made wine back then; fermenting it with no cultivated yeasts in big, raw cement tanks, pressing it, racking once, then keeping the wine in the same concrete tanks for nine months until the next harvest. This wine is composed of a field blend of certified biodynamic, young and old vine Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano from estate fruit vineyards around the village of Lanciego, planted in cool clay and calcareous soils at between 450 and 700 meters in elevation.
