2015 Kaesler Old Vine Shiraz Barossa Valley

I enjoyed the 2015 Kaesler Old Vine Shiraz at my friend Monica’s birthday party, at cool Italian Restaurant in Shanghai in 2019. The Old Vine was one of the most outstanding wines I had on this lovely wine-tasting party night and was a clear favourite of mine. My notes on the night read - An outstanding, conservative and black-fruity wine. Flavours of black fruit are evident with tones of blackberry, plum, blackcurrant and black cherry with oaky characteristics. The Kaesler also displayed a nose of eucalyptus and black pepper and also featured good acidity. I could drink this every day of the week. Rating ★★★★★

About Kaesler Winery

The Kaesler family settled in the Barossa Valley in the 1840s and the first owners of the Kaesler vineyards took up 96 acres in 1891 and by 1893 had planted the entire acreage with Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro (Mourvedre) and White Hermitage vines. To this day, Kaesler wines are made from these ancient, dry grown vineyards.

In 1999, Reid Bosward seized the opportunity to become the head of the new Kaesler family when he and his partners bought Kaesler, and at this time, the Kaesler vineyards consisted of over 70% red wine vines. Having access to premium old vine material, Reid set out to produce bold estate wines representative of the Barossa Valley. The intensity of the old vine Shiraz inspired Reid to produce premium batches, the ‘Bogan” and the “Old Bastard.”
