Chiang Mai, Thailand - High Pollution + Coronavirus

In March 2020 in Chiang Mai, Thailand there’s high pollution and the COVID-19 to deal with. I went for a walk and captured some images from Chiang Mai during the Coronavirus shutdown.

Key Events:

  • 28th March 2020 - 109 new coronavirus cases and one death in Thailand, bringing the Thailand total to 1,245 cases and six fatalities. Of the total cases to 1,245 in 57 provinces in Thailand - 1,032 patients were Thais.

  • 26th March 2020 - Thailand banned the entry of foreigners as its next step to tackle the spread of Covid-19 under the Emergency Decree.

  • 26th March 2020 - Major roads into Chiang Mai will have screening checkpoints for COVID-19 from 26th March until 30th April.

  • 26th March 2020 - Chiang Mai authorities began a deep scrub of the city, starting off with spraying and scrubbing public areas.

  • 25th March 2020 - A fire in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park in Chiang Mai sent air pollution in the northern province to record highs. The bushfire also sent PM2.5 levels in the area to "record levels" of around 1,000 microgrammes per cubic metre (µg/m³), 20 times above levels considered safe by the Pollution Control Department (PCD).

  • 25th March, 2020 - Thai Airways suspends all flights until May 31.

  • 21st March 2020 - Shopping malls and non-essential shops ordered to close from until April 12 as it steps up the battle against the spread of the coronavirus. Most stores in malls will be closed except supermarkets, pharmacies, food take-out and delivery and other essential services.

  • 20th March 2020 - Thai government requires visitors to Thailand to have a medical certificates and health insurance to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Travellers to Thailand have to now show authorities a health certificate, issued no more than 72 hours before travelling, confirming that they have been tested and are free from the virus. They must also present an insurance policy showing minimum coverage for coronavirus of not less than US$100,000.
